Bredwardine sits on one of the most celebrated stretches of the Wye Valley Walk, the 136-mile long-distance trail that follows the river from its source in the Welsh hills to Chepstow. Stage 8 of the walk runs directly from Hay-on-Wye to Bredwardine, making The Hayloft a natural base for walking this section at your own pace.
The route is a lovely mix of field walking and country lanes, passing through quiet hamlets and climbing Merbach Hill at 1,043 feet, where on a clear day the views take in eleven counties.
The church at Bredwardine is the burial place of Francis Kilvert, the much-loved 19th century nature diarist who wrote so tenderly about this very landscape.
For those who prefer shorter walks, the lanes and footpaths around Bredwardine, Moccas and the river meadows offer gentle, rewarding routes at any time of year.
Spring brings blossom-laden orchards and bluebells, summer offers wildflower meadows, and autumn turns the ancient woodland to gold. Winter walks along the Wye, when the valley is quiet and the light sits low over the hills, have a quiet character of their own.

A real gem! Karen's place is extremely comfortable and quite unique: an apartment contained within a larger house, with its own private staircase/access . It was spotlessly clean and had everything you need. The location is gorgeous and rural, though only a 10 minute drive from Hay-on-Wye. Communication with Karen was super easy and the check-in process simple with a lock box. Karen was very accommodating and flexible when I made an error with the booking as well. Highly recommended.
