Just six miles from The Hayloft, Hay-on-Wye is one of the most distinctive small towns in Britain. Famous the world over for its independent bookshops, it draws visitors year-round, but it is the festivals that bring it most vividly to life.
The Hay Festival, held each May, is one of the world's most celebrated literature and arts festivals. Over eleven days it brings together writers, thinkers, performers and audiences from across the globe for talks, debates, readings, workshops, comedy and music. In 2026 the festival runs from 21 to 31 May.
HowTheLightGetsIn, the world's largest philosophy and music festival, also comes to Hay-on-Wye each May — a long weekend of ideas, debates and live performance over the Spring Bank Holiday. A Hay Festival Winter Weekend takes place in late November, launching new fiction and non-fiction alongside comedy, music and candlelit storytelling.
Beyond the festivals, the castle, reopened following a major restoration and hosts exhibitions and events throughout the year. The bookshops, cafes and independent traders make it an easy, unhurried place to spend a morning or an afternoon at any time of year
A former 17th century coaching inn right on the banks of the Wye, with an oak panelled bar, a snug and a beer garden. A well-known stop for anglers and walkers, serving traditional food using local produce. Please check their website for current opening times and seasonal availability
A beautifully maintained Victorian walled garden on the banks of the Wye, open year-round. The Walled Garden Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, homemade cakes and scones — open to everyone, no garden ticket required. A lovely start to a morning or a reward after a walk. Please check their website for current opening times.
A traditional country pub and restaurant in the village of Clifford, serving home-cooked food with a good range of real ales and local ciders. Popular with walkers on the Wye Valley Walk.
Reputedly the oldest pub in Herefordshire, with parts of the building dating back to the 12th century. A proper village local with an open fire, real ales, local ciders and traditional food, set on the village green. Well worth the short detour
A Herefordshire institution — often described as the Harrods of Herefordshire. A culinary showcase for local farmers, growers and food producers, with a butchery, deli, fresh fruit and vegetables, and award-winning beef and soft fruit from the farm itself. The farm shop makes its own award-winning ice cream and sorbets, available in tubs or from the outdoor ice cream shack in summer. A good first stop for stocking the kitchen after arrival, and an enjoyable outing in its own right.

Stage 8 of the Wye Valley Walk starts here.

A real gem! Karen's place is extremely comfortable and quite unique: an apartment contained within a larger house, with its own private staircase/access . It was spotlessly clean and had everything you need. The location is gorgeous and rural, though only a 10 minute drive from Hay-on-Wye. Communication with Karen was super easy and the check-in process simple with a lock box. Karen was very accommodating and flexible when I made an error with the booking as well. Highly recommended.
Delightful stay. Clear instructions. Immaculately laid out apartment. All the amenities we could ever want. Plus some nice extra touches made us feel right at home and somewhere special at the same time. Luxurious bathroom. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful property in very peaceful location. We had a lovely, restful night and we highly recommend a stay here. Lots to see and do in the local area and we hope to return!
